Driving Traffic to Your Small Business Website: What’s It Worth?

website marketing, small business

The number one question that is most consistently asked of me by small businesses is…. How can we get highly ranked in Google for our business? Dam good question; how much are you willing to spend I always ask them. But more importantly, I ask them what they would do once they got them there. I mean, if you’re going to go to all the time and effort it takes to get effectively ranked in Google and the other top search engines, then it’s kind of important to know what you’d do to capitalize on all traffic you’re guaranteed to get.

A Simple Rule of Thumb:
If you’re capable of making revenue from increased web traffic, then spending the money on search engine optimization (SE0) and search engine marketing (SEM) may be right for your small business. Otherwise, forget about it. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t increase your web traffic or spend the time it takes to increase your web traffic and get ranked. I’m simply saying that spending money to generate increased web traffic may not worth it for most businesses, especially small businesses owners.

What’s Your Business Strategy?
Before you think about driving traffic to your site, concentrate on setting goals for the site that align with your business strategy. A great example would be photographers. Maybe your strategy is to have a complete e-commerce website where you sell your pictures to a niche audience. In this case, driving traffic is vital because it is directly applicable to the business model. But let’s say you’re a photographer and simply want to show off your portfolio to potential clients to make them aware of your talents and specialties. Spending time and money to drive leads in this case would be unwise.

Knowledge Is Power:
The best way for small businesses to get ahead in the world of online marketing is to make the commitment to learn about it. I’m not saying you become an expert and quit your day job. But I am saying that understanding some of the fundamentals of SEO and SEM is vital. In fact, you don’t have to spend a ton of money to generate leads and take advantage of the multitude of options available for getting ranked and generating traffic.
